Coaching Development Is Evolving: New Pathways, New Standards

The Trio Coaching Perspective A monthly exploration of coaching competencies, ethics, and real-world application
At Trio Coaching Academy, we believe coaching education should go beyond learning frameworks in theory. Each month, this newsletter is designed to help coaches:
- Strengthen practical coaching skills grounded in the ICF Core Competencies
- Reflect on ethics, mindset, and coaching presence in real-world application
- Explore emerging trends and evolving standards in professional coaching
- Build sustainable pathways for growth, credentialing, and leadership
Whether you are beginning your coaching journey or refining an established practice, we hope this space supports both your development and your vision for what coaching can become.
What’s Inside
This month, we’re exploring two developments shaping the future of coaching:
- Trio Coaching Academy’s expanded coaching development pathways and upcoming cohort opportunities
- Recent ICF updates regarding the new Mentor Coach Specialization (MCS)
As expectations around coach development, mentor coaching, and credentialing continue to evolve, coaches are being asked to think more intentionally about long-term growth and professional readiness. Our goal is to help you navigate these changes with greater clarity, confidence, and perspective.
Trio Updates: New Programs & Upcoming Cohorts
We are excited to officially open enrollment for our upcoming Fall 2026 coaching cohorts.
Over the last year, we have refined our curriculum to create clearer pathways for coaches pursuing ACC and PCC development.
Our programs are designed to help coaches learn and practice the ICF Core Competencies, apply coaching tools and methodologies, receive mentor coaching and developmental feedback, and build confidence coaching in real-world situations.
Whether you are new to coaching or advancing toward PCC-level development, each pathway combines structured education, practice coaching, mentor coaching, coaching business development, and support toward ICF credentialing.

Industry Update: ICF Mentor Coach Specialization (MCS)
This month also brought an important update from the International Coaching Federation regarding mentor coaching standards.
Beginning in January 2027, mentor coaching used toward ICF credentialing and renewals must be completed through an ICF Mentor Coach Specialization (MCS) qualified mentor coach.
This shift reflects the growing recognition that mentor coaching is its own distinct discipline — requiring not only coaching expertise, but the ability to observe coaching over time, evaluate competency development, and provide structured developmental feedback.
The introduction of the MCS is designed to:
- Increase consistency in mentor coaching globally
- Strengthen quality and transparency across credentialing pathways
- Create clearer standards for developmental feedback and competency evaluation
- Better support coaches pursuing ACC, PCC, and MCC credentials
At Trio Coaching Academy, we fully support this advancement in coaching standards and are proud to share that all Trio mentor coaches will hold the ICF Mentor Coach Specialization (MCS) by January 2027.
As the coaching profession evolves, we believe rigorous development, reflective practice, and high-quality mentor coaching matter more than ever.
A Final Reflection
As you think about your own development, consider:
- Where are you in your coaching journey right now?
- What kind of support or structure would help you grow most effectively?
- Are you choosing isolated training experiences — or a longer-term development pathway?
Whether you are just beginning or continuing to deepen your practice, intentional development matters.
And often, the strongest coaching growth happens not simply through learning more — but through practicing differently.
