What’s Inside

Presence is often discussed as one of coaching's most important skills, yet it can also be one of the most difficult to define and develop. This month, we're exploring how presence shapes coaching conversations, supports client growth, and influences a coach's ability to respond to what is emerging in real time.

In this issue:

• Competency Spotlight: What it means to maintain presence in coaching
• Coaching Insight: Why presence is developed through practice, not performance
• Industry Update: The growing conversation around mindfulness, attention, and coaching effectiveness
• Program Pathways: How structured practice supports deeper coaching presence

As coaching continues to evolve, the ability to remain present, curious, and responsive may be one of the most valuable skills coaches can develop.

Competency Spotlight: Maintaining Presence

Many coaches begin their development focused on asking powerful questions or improving their listening skills. While those competencies are important, they are often strengthened by something underneath them: presence.

Maintaining Presence is the ability to remain fully conscious, flexible, and responsive during a coaching conversation. Rather than following a script, thinking ahead to the next question, or focusing on demonstrating a technique, the coach remains engaged with what is happening in the moment.

Presence allows coaches to:
• Notice subtle shifts in energy, language, or emotion
• Follow emerging client awareness
• Adapt their approach based on what the client needs
• Balance curiosity with confidence
• Remain grounded when conversations become complex or uncertain

Strong coaching presence is rarely about doing more. Often, it is about becoming more aware of what is already happening and trusting the coaching process enough to stay with it.

Coaching Insight: Presence Is Not Performance

Many developing coaches experience pressure to "sound like a coach."

They focus on finding the perfect question, remembering competency language, or demonstrating specific coaching techniques. While skill development matters, coaches often discover that the strongest coaching moments occur when they stop trying to perform and start paying closer attention.

Presence is not about having the right answer.

It is about creating the conditions where meaningful client awareness can emerge.

This often requires coaches to:
• Tolerate uncertainty
• Release attachment to a specific outcome
• Listen beyond words
• Trust silence
• Follow curiosity rather than assumptions

These skills are not developed through theory alone. They are developed through observation, feedback, reflection, and repeated coaching practice.

Industry Update: Attention in an Age of Distraction

As technology continues to accelerate and AI tools become more integrated into daily work, conversations about attention, focus, and human connection are becoming increasingly relevant.

Many leadership and coaching professionals are asking:

How do we remain fully present in environments designed to divide our attention?

For coaches, this question extends beyond productivity. Presence directly impacts a coach's ability to build trust, listen deeply, and support meaningful client reflection.

While technology continues to evolve, the uniquely human capacities of curiosity, empathy, awareness, and connection remain at the center of effective coaching.

The challenge may not be learning new tools.

It may be protecting the attention and awareness required to use them wisely.

Program Pathways: Developing Presence Through Practice

Presence is not developed by reading about presence.

It develops through coaching.

Reflection for Coaches

As you think about your own coaching development, consider:

  • When do you feel most present during a coaching conversation?
    • What tends to pull your attention away from the client?
    • How do you prepare yourself mentally and emotionally before coaching?
    • What practices help you remain curious when uncertainty arises?

A Final Reflection

The development of coaching presence is not a destination. It is an ongoing practice.

As coaches, we continually learn to notice more, assume less, listen more deeply, and trust the coaching process more fully.

Perhaps the question is not whether we are present all the time.

Perhaps the question is how quickly we notice when we are not—and how intentionally we return.
